EARTHSONGS

Statement: We’re losing evolutionary resources like forests, reefs and rivers that evolved over millions of years, every day to human greed and we’re continuing to torment and oppress nature (including humans). Life itself continues to shrink at an unprecedented pace. We have to come together as a species to take a stand for the Earth. Here are some things that I do –

TRAVEL, ENERGY, WASTE

CLOTHES & ACCESSORIES

For years, I have been taking buses and trains to travel long distances. I take one round trip of flights a year from Delhi to Berlin and back. I live a slow life. I ride a bicycle. I weigh opportunities against their impact. The idea is not just to do it myself- but get my team and my band to do it and hopefully inspire others to do it too. I live in a small appartment. I spend a lot of time outdoors. I use rechargeable batteries for my equipment. I carry my own water bottle so I don't have to buy plastic. It's just getting creative all the time to live within the limits set for us by nature.

Fashion is one of the most polluting industries. As someone who was trying to live a conscious life, I figured the way for me to make a change was to downsize my wardrobe and only own pieces that were upcycled or created with the least harm to nature. I like to borrow/ upcycle clothes because it means I'm consciously saying no to fast fashion. Thank includes saying no to many brands who want to dress me/ lend me clothes. I love to wear Saris for my performances because I have my mumma, my grandmother and several aunties who have plenty of old cotton saris, waiting to be worn. They look gorgeous more so behind a guitar, and I don't have to bother buying anything. I love to wear leaves and flowers as jewellery.

LIFESTYLE AND FOOD

I gave up meat 10 years ago, and I consume as few milk products as possible. Leather is a no for me. I grow some of my own food, and through Baag Studio (my design studio), I design for and teach people to be self-sufficient.

TOURING & AFFORESTATION

My solo tour in March 2020 – Make Forests Not War was the first carbon neutral tour in India. We made this possible by planting a local, indigenous food forest with the help of Permaculturist Claudiu Oprea at the Yogi Art Centre in Goa, India. In 2022, I did the 2nd one, called Songs for Forests. The goal is to set up a charity/organisation that can invest funds into afforestation projects.
